September 2002 the East Brunswick Police Department implemented a program to place an experienced officer to work in Hammarskjold Middle School, Churchill Junior High School and the East Brunswick High School. The purpose of the assignment is to put law enforcement officer in the school environment to interact closely with administrators and staff in order to develop a working partnership. Through this partnership, an alliance has been created to ensure that East Brunswick students receive an excellent education in a safe environment.
Due to the efforts of the school resource officer, the program has been enthusiastically welcomed by administrators and students. The officer has helped bridge the gap between police and young people by taking an active personal interest in students and their activities.
The School Resource Officer (SRO) is present during regular school hours to respond to and investigate any calls for service within the school and assist in developing school preparedness guidelines as well as formulate educational crime prevention programs to reduce the opportunity for crime within the school.
Patrolman George Uhrig (GUHRIG@ebnet.org) has served in the Patrol Division and Investigative Division. He received his Associates Degree from Middlesex County College in Marketing and is currently assigned as the SRO.
