 Employment with the East Brunswick Police Department

The East Brunswick Police Department is an equal opportunity employer that offers exciting opportunities for people to work for a premier law enforcement agency.  The East Brunswick Police recruitment testing consists of the following phases:

Phase 1 – Registration:   
If you meet the minimum qualifications listed below, you may register for the recruitment process.  A non-refundable fee of $50 in cash or certified check must be made at the time of registration, which will be take place in East Brunswick Police Headquarters on any of the following dates: 
                                            August 19, 2008 (2PM – 8PM)
                                            August 20, 2008 (2PM – 8PM)
                                            August 21, 2008 (2PM – 8PM)
                                            August 22, 2008 (2PM – 8PM)
                                            August 23, 2008 (10AM – 4PM)

Phase 2 – Physical Agility:
Details about the physical agility test, including date, time and location, will be provided at the time of registration.

Phase 3 – Written Exam:
Applicants who pass the physical agility test will be invited back to undergo a written examination.  The date, time and location of the exam will be provided to each applicant upon exiting the physical agility testing site, along with a study guide.

Phase 4 – Background Investigation:
Based on cumulative averages of the above tests, a limited number of applicants will be invited back to complete an extensive background application, which will cover the historical aspects of the applicant’s life.  Findings that are inconsistent with the information supplied by the applicant will result in the removal of the applicant from further consideration.

Phase 5 – Oral Board:
Applicants that are found to have a background that is suitable for police employment will undergo an oral board interview with a number of police executives.  Applicants will receive a numerical score for their interview based on their performance.

Phase 6 – Psychological:
Based on cumulative scores and anticipated vacancies, a limited amount of applicants who pass the oral board may be invited back for a conditional offer of employment.  After receiving this conditional offer, the applicant will undergo a psychological examination. 

Phase 7 – Medical Exam:
Based on cumulative scores and anticipated vacancies, applicants who successfully complete the psychological examination may be invited back to undergo extensive medical examinations to determine their fitness for employment as a police officer. 

Phase 8 – Appointment:
Based on cumulative scores and anticipated vacancies, applicants who pass their medical examinations may be appointed to a position of probationary patrolman and begin POST training.  Upon completion of POST training, those requiring certification will be enrolled in a NJ Police Training Commission (PTC) approved training academy.  The probationary patrolman must successfully complete all PTC requirements for certification. 

Upon graduation from the police academy, each probationary patrolman must successfully complete the Field Training Program within the East Brunswick Police.  At the one year anniversary of academy graduation, each probationary patrolman will undergo an evaluation to determine if they will be appointed as a patrolman.

Below is a list of the minimum qualifications that East Brunswick Police Officer Applicants must possess:

  • You must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of New Jersey by the date of appointment;
  • You must possess a valid NJ driver's license by the date of appointment;
  • You must not be less than 18 years of age on the date of the written exam, no more than 35 years of age at the time of appointment.  In accordance with New Jersey Statutes, age exemptions for military service and prior law enforcement service may be granted to meet the maximum age standards;
  • You must have visual acuity 20/100 in each eye without artificial correction, 20/30 corrected;
  • You must have normal color perception, depth perception, and peripheral vision;
  • You must have auditory acuity at or below 25db in each ear;
  • You must be physically capable of meeting the mandated firearms qualifications mandated by Attorney General guidelines;
  • You must be psychologically fit to perform all the duties of a police officer;
  • You must meet the requirements that are set forth in the job description for a police officer in every respect. Copies of the job description are available for inspection at the time of registration;
  • You must possess a minimum of 60 credits from an accredited college or university, or 30 college credits along with 2 years of active military or full-time law enforcement experience at the time of registration. Law enforcement experience shall include full-time employment along with “Class A” certification from the New Jersey Police Training Commission.
